In the 1970s, Richard and Margaret Nield purchased a 242 hectare block of land to add to their existing 72 hectares in the Boyup Brook Shire. Naming the farm 'Beulah', the sheep and cropping enterprise was established. Their neighbour at the time, John Rifici from Perth, had established a vineyard growing grenache and muscat. As neighbours, Richard, Margaret and their children helped harvest the grapes during vintage.
In the 1990s, Richard and son, Craig, looked to diversify the farm as the wool industry was in a downturn. Knowing how well grapes grew in the area, they began to discuss suitable sites for a vineyard on the Beulah farm. This led to the 12 hectare vineyard being established 270m above sea level on a western hill with gravel loam over clay subsoils. In 1996, the Chardonnay block was planted, followed by the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in 1997. Later on, the vineyard was expanded with the Semillon and Viognier varieties being planted. |
